The humble carpet makes such a big difference to the home. It is rather surprising to think that the carpet itself is not that modern a settling in the home. For the most part our ancestors made do with simple straw and later clay tiles. However, to ensure that we have decent insulation, warmth and general cosiness a carpet is by far the best option. You do need to keep that carpet tidy and clean. A Carpet Cleaner Worcester based firm is just the ticket for that. What are the most famous designs in carpets through the ages?
- Turkish Carpet. One of the oldest and most recognisable forms of carpetstyle is that of the Turkish variety. It seems that they were being produced since Neolithic times but the famous designs that we see today took root in the early 1600’s making their way to the rest of Europe through trade such as the Silk road. They were considered to be a sign of great wealth and status.
- Axminster carpets. This Devon family firm was started in 1755. Thomas Whitty was inspired by the Turkish rugs he had seen to make an Anglicised version. The first products were heavy tapestries but he soon adapted this using weaving machines to mass produce designs.
- Wilton Carpets. Dating even further back than Axminister, the Village of Wilton in Wiltshire can say it began in 1655. The Earl of Pembroke smuggled back some experienced Belgian carpet makers (apparently in wine barrels!). A dynasty of industry was set up lasting locally until 1995.
