McLaren 720S ‘Spa 68’ from MSO celebrates McLaren’s first victory in Formula 1

The McLaren dealership in Brussels has just commissioned McLaren Special Operations , the special creations division of Woking, a very interesting McLaren 720S from which only three units will be manufactured, two of which have already been sold by the aforementioned concession.

It is an edition called 720S ‘Spa 68’ that commemorates the first victory of McLaren in Formula 1 , five decades after Bruce McLaren, founder of the company, managed to win for his team in the premier class, in the Grand Prix of Belgium of 1968.

McLaren, a New Zealand driver who was considered a master of Spa at the time , had won five podiums in seven races but failed to win in F1 until he faced the long European circuit with a car built by his own team, imposing himself in front to pilots of the likes of John Surtees or Jackie Stewart.

The three McLaren 720S ‘Spa 68’ sport a commemorative plaque with the unit number, MSO wheels with five double spokes and satin black, and all are painted in MSO Anniversary custom orange , created to emulate the orange tone of the winning car on the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit, the McLaren M7A with orange Papaya decoration.

It could not miss the silhouette of the Belgian layout (then 14 kilometers long, since the current one is a reduced version of the one used at that time), in this case decorating the headrests – in the form of embroidery in orange – and the heel cups -just in front of the rear wheel arches-. The key, for example, is orange and also reads “Spa 68” .

The model, however, is strictly standard in terms of specifications: carbon fiber monocoque , adaptive shock absorbers, 1,283 kilograms of weight, engine 4.0 liters V8 biturbo of 720 HP and 770 Nm, carbocerámicos brakes, 0 to 100 km / h in 2.9 seconds, 0 to 200 km / h in 7.9 seconds, 0 to 300 km / h in 21.4 seconds and a maximum speed of 341 km / h.
