What are auditory hallucinations?

One in ten of us will experience hearing voices, or auditory hallucinations, at some point in our lives.

Hallucinations are where you see, hear, smell, taste, or feel things that appear to be real, but only exist in your mind. Auditory hallucinations involve hearing sounds or voices that nobody else hears.

Whilst these are sometimes caused by an underlying mental health condition, it is not always the case.

Auditory hallucinations can vary from one person to another. They are sometimes neutral, or positive. However, others may experience frightening or distressing episodes.

Causes:

Experiencing traumatic life events that have become associated with PTSD.
Lack of sleep, stress, or worry.
Extreme hunger.
A temporary effect of illness or fever.
The use of recreational drugs, or as a side-effect of prescribed medication.
As a symptom of certain mental health conditions such as bipolar disorder or Schizophrenia.

Support

It is important that those experiencing auditory hallucinations look after themselves by seeking out guidance from their GP or a talking therapy service if they find that they are struggling to cope.

Taking time out to engage in self-care and share experiences with others may also be therapeutic.

Training

Training for those who directly or indirectly support those suffering from auditory hallucinations teaches how to empathise with the client and when to signpost them onto further interventions where necessary. Learners will become familiar with recognising the signs and symptoms, as well as having a background knowledge of the causes and associated difficulties of experiencing auditory hallucinations.
