Eight materials used for drain pipes

Drain pipes provide an essential function, and they can be made of a number of different materials.

PVC

PVC plastic has become the preferred choice for wastewater pipes for several reasons. It is lightweight, durable, easy to install, resistant to rust and chemicals, relatively affordable, and can easily be fitted together or linked-up to existing pipes. PVC pipes are commonly-used in newer homes and are usually white in colour.

Concrete

Concrete drainage pipes can be made in many different sizes and shapes and are high-strength, long-lasting, and resistant to chemicals. In addition to this, they are simple to install.

Clay

Clay drainage pipes are resistant to chemical degradation but they are more fragile than PVC, and are heavy and hard to cut. This is perhaps why they are used less frequently than they once were.

Copper

Copper pipes are corrosion resistant and are a popular choice for water supply pipes as well as drainage pipes. They do, however, require extremely precise cutting.

Cast Iron

This material is known for its strength, resistance to abrasion, and longevity – all of which are desirable for drain pipes. It was widely used in homes before the 1960s. It is, however, prone to rusting and corrosion.

Galvanised Steel:

This material is strong and durable but, like Cast Iron, is susceptible to rust and corrosion. It is still found in some older homes but is no longer used in new builds.

ABS

This plastic was one of the first alternatives to metal piping. It is easy to replace and corrosion resistant but there are question marks surrounding its durability which have resulted in fewer plumbers using it for drainage pipes. ABS is usually black in colour.

PEX

Like PVC, PEX is highly-durable and resistant to rust. It is also easy to cut, highly-flexible, and resistant to heat.
