The Exodus of the Jewish people from the Pharaoh and the ten plagues that allowed them to escape slavery.

God sent Moses and Aaron to the Pharaoh and told them to tell this powerful leader to “Let His People Go” and to release them from slavery.  God instructed the two men to threaten the Pharaoh that if he didn’t agree then a plague of Locusts would infest his land.  The Pharaoh didn’t believe Moses and Aaron and sent them away and the locusts arrived, swarming all over the land and devouring all the crops.  Even though the Pharaoh was worried by this turn of events he refused to allow the people of Israel to leave Egypt. Then a complete darkness covered the land and for three days it was pitch black, only the Israelites had light in their homes.

There followed eight more plagues to fall on the unfortunate Pharoah and the people of Egypt, they were, fresh water turning to blood, frogs, flies, boils, livestock, pestilence, lice and the death of all first-born Egyptian babies!  Eventually the Israelites were allowed to leave Egypt and their awful lives as slaves and fled the land, escaping through the Jordan River that parted to allow them safe passage to the other side.

To celebrate the freedom of the Israelites, the Jewish people remember this time by taking part in Passover festivities.  Families traditionally sit and eat together from Seder Plates only consuming foods that represent sacrifice, the circle of life, spring, new birth and the bitterness of slavery.
